Semester Two: Week One

Week One

Starting to get back into the swing of things - first, through independent research which really helped myself cultivate my ideas and thoughts into something more substantial. Looking at Artists such as: Ingrid Calame, Peter Doig and R.B Kitaj, created the foundations of where I would like my work to head in terms of concept, ideas as well as colour scheme. Looking through their books that I got from the library only enhanced this further. I'm trying to minimise the amount of colour I have been using to a more muted palette, I feel as if I need to try something new and fresh and challenge myself more compared to previous works. Secondly, putting myself out there slightly more and trying new medias such as ceramics and film. I attended the ceramic induction and it gave me some new ideas on what I could do with my work and where I could potentially see it heading. But, before starting anything afresh with ceramics, I need to familiarise myself with how ceramics works and what I could make with it, before diving in too soon. Looking back on semester one, I think I stretched myself too far and tried too many things and did not pace myself well, which resulted in exhaustion and not feeling confident about my work. I'm trying to take things easier and be more relaxed - but still keeping the ball rolling.

Our first group tutorial with our new tutor (Anna) was really fun! I got to meet new people I hadn't spoken to yet, and got to learn about their practice which was really insightful. I love hearing about what everyone is up to and how they create work around their thoughts and ideas. Anna gave us the task of picking one thing that we hold significance with and I chose part of my project from last year as I feel as if it created new boundaries for where my work could head and pushed me out of my comfort zone. Also, we had to write down techniques or media we haven't tried yet and why we would like to try them and if we would want to translate the media we wanted to try into the "Our Space" project, the "Our Space" project was given to us during our first Monday Meet Up and allows for us to create a group exhibition around whichever media or techniques we choose within the allocated space - the second year seminar room. I really like this idea as it encourages collaborations between multiple people and creates a safe space where we can all be creative and share thoughts.
