Where things began taking up speed.

Dancing between being in clay and sending emails. I began collecting more materials to further experiment with and things were beginning to take shape how I imagined them to. I never really thought too much about experimenting with paper but after looking at Karla Blacks work and talking to Delia through our tutorials - i thought why not? So far, i like the texture, forms and shapes the paper gives naturally once crumpled up or manipulated. also, like the juxtaposition of a lofi material with something of more quality such as the fabric. i'm trying to find a good counter balance between the two and i think the upcoming weeks will help with reaching that goal.

I've began situating and positioning the found and made objects and sculptures within my work and i really like the way they cradle within the material and how they interact as a piece on it own. I love the way the branches and objects interact and play off one another. this idea of natural vs manmade, which I plan on exploring throughout my work. However, I think some parts need some tweaking and eventually will become larger, the small scale works for now but it would probably be best to then go onto something a bit bigger. Particularly, the glass objects and clay mountains. I've made a few more mountains (waiting to be fired in the kiln) and i'm hoping over the next few weeks I can use them to make glass moulds of. I've been in ceramics quite a lot lately and i've been learning a lot in terms of glazes and firing temperatures, which i didn't have much experience with. the mountains hold promise and I like the idea of having them as objects of their own and how they mimic stones. the clay branches and twigs I have been making are not proving to be as effective as I thought, they're too 'stiff' and a bit heavier than I expected (idk what i was expecting lol) I like the texture of the clay but it didn't go as planned. However, after my open tutorial with Arthur Watson - we spoke aloooot about techniques which i am super grateful for - he gave me some foundry wax!! We spoke about how it can be moulded and manipulated to form shapes like branches and it's more time efficient and not as heavy as clay. Also, it can be manipulated in water! how cool !!! it's definitely something I had never though about and will definitely incorporate into my work.

Picking back up where I left off on my drawing has been great, I'm really pushing myself to get my work to a higher standard and see how much my abilities develop. I'm happy with the progress i'm making in terms of my drawing. Drawing inspiration from Aidans Koch use of graphite and Francelise McGurn's use of colour, shape and how they take their work off the canvas and onto the wall is something i'm really interested in. my drawing have made this slow but gradual transition from 'just drawings' to paintings which still encapsulate the same ideas i have been portraying. I see potential in where my painting are headed, I'm happy with what I have made so far. I will eventually try take them off the canvas and perhaps bleed them onto the studio wall and see how that goes (?) i like the idea of taking it off the canvas, as i'm not the biggest fan of canvas in general as i feel it can be too bouncy at times and i prefer a solid surface - which the studio wall could be the holy grail of.

"Lots of Love" 2019 & "Self Control" 2019 France-Lise McGurn.

Some favourites from Peter Doigs "No Foreign Lands" book.

Top left "Girl In Tree" 2001 & "Driftwood" 2002. Top right "Blotter" 1993.

Bottom "Paragrand" 2006.

Doig has been one of the main catalysts for my work this semester, I love his use of colour and composition and his ability to capture a landscape and people within landscapes. I've been getting more engaged in drawing and painting as a means to preserve memories and get everything that's in my head out onto paper and canvas. It's been going well so far, I think i'm getting better at translating my thoughts and ideas more cohesively and properly. Looking through the "No foreign lands" book gave me some major inspiration on how to properly address my ideas and the best medium to tackle them in. I'm eager to get back into oil painting but I'm still not too keen on it. I've been relying on gouache, watercolours and ink with a mix of graphite and charcoal, which is still as effective in my opinion. I like to merge various mediums into my work but sometimes i think they need to be toned down or less busy. (?) I like Doigs use of preliminary drawings before moving onto the actual piece, that's something i've never really took much consideration for, things just happen when it comes to my work. I might try and take a more calculated approach to some aspects of my work and consider elements more.
