bringing mirrors and other things into the mix

decided to etch onto some of my mirrors and i intended on laser cutting some but wasn't sure if it would look too prescribed and preferred the messy way of my handwriting and drawing that would make it look more natural. i would have liked to have made bigger pieces for my installation, more clay and glass pieces as i was drawn to them last semester. the perspex is still great but it's too flat for my liking but offers great results nonetheless, I feel clay and glass would elevate my ideas to a different standard and would allow for me to experiment more with lighting and textures. i think i've done relatively well with the textures i have, but the added tactility of smooth glass and coarse clay is something i felt was missing from my work. the natural vs the man made is something i like to explore within my work and how they interact with me and the places they inhabit. in a similar way but not quite, the canvas and plastic act like that. i tried playing around with the canvas and suspending it from the wire grid i had set up in my studio, although i was definitely lacking in material. due to local shops being closed and online not being as reliable, i had to make do with what i had. saying that, i feel i've done a good job but i can see where i could've done better. for example, utilising the fabrics i had more and turning them into something more sculptural or taking the paper and try to mimic fabric and the ways it drapes and sits over objects. i decided not to continue with the canvas material as it didn't offer me anything apart from sculptural forms, which are still important but not as crucial.

i've been drawn to paper clips lately and other fastener/ durable materials like tape and belts. theres something quite interesting about their shapes, texture and quality. i like the forms and textures especially, i'd like to cast some in bronze and make mini sculptures of paper casts and clips and see what i could get from it. the yellow drawing was one of the first drawings i decided to turn more 'sculptural' using the paper clip, it's fastened and positioned it. paper clips resemble safety and and structure within my work as they're usually associated with keeping clothes or fabrics in tact, which a similar thing is happening with my paper work. i love the contrast of something solid in structure with something that's so flimsy and unstable.
