Semester Two - week 14

Writer's picture: Declan McCourtDeclan McCourt

finally got into etching!!!

I got to experiment with soft grounds and textures and really loved the results, I do wish i could've experiment with more and done bigger plates like steel. I'm definitely gonna continue with etching in 4th year and incorporate it more into my drawings. I can imagine the etchings being drawn or painted on, I think that'll add an extra layer and dimension to my work. sometimes I feel my drawings can be a bit flat which doesn't bother me that much, but other times I can see where an extra layer would be useful. my prints turned out okay, I never applied the ground evenly but I didn't know this until it was etched, so all these lil marks and scratches have appeared which are nice but some are too excessive and distract from the print itself. I really want to include more textures next time I work with soft grounds, I think it's a great medium to work with and my work corresponds with it. it would've helped earlier to get access to print and do some of my visual diary work with etching, I think that would elevate some of my ideas.

Other than etching, nothing else has really happened. I started tidying up my space as the end of the semester is approaching and I have a lot of little things to take home. Some of the work though will be exhibited in the Generator annual members show which i'm really excited about! I can't wait to see what my work will look like in a new environment and how it reacts to a new space out with my studio.
