Semester Two: Week Eight

Writer's picture: Declan McCourtDeclan McCourt

Finally got around to developing the roll of film I had from October when myself, Alex, Lily and Soomin went to the pumpkin farm in Cupar. It felt good to have memories resurface through the development process. I cherish all of the friendships I have made through the past year.

The process of developing photos is something I am not familiar with, so it was really good that I got the chance to try it. However, it is something that requires a lot of attention and is meticulously thought out which made me struggle a little bit. I think the hardest part was preparing the roll in the dark and cutting the edge off, as the room was pitch black. The rest I could get the hang of , it was really cool to see the photos appear when they were placed in the photo emulsion. I would definitely try it again and it gave me new ideas for future pieces, as I found that you can use 'liquid light' paint and use it on different surfaces - which is something that really appeals to me. I like how loose and fluid the development process is and how you can use shadows and objects to expose onto surfaces. I will be trying it all again for future work to see where it takes me.

Continuing through the week, I kept experimenting with placements and lighting for my installation.

I am really happy with how the projections look on the surfaces and the way light refracts off the different textures and material. I plan on getting larger mirrors and using potentially another projector to experiment with and see if I could overlap or intertwine images. I love how the images when refracted against the corners of the ceiling and room , they warp and become almost three dimensional, like a hologram. Including more warped images through glass or other reflective materials could enhance the atmosphere of my installation. Recently, I began looking more into atmospheres and how artists use colour to enhance atmosphere, through artists such Haegue Yang and Max Brand I researched how they visualise their space and why they use particular colours.

Haegue Yang " Mountains of Encounter" 2008. Max Brand and Joanne Robertson " Poppies" 2017.

I love their way of taking over a space and turning it into something much more. I like the interactive elements of their work and how it stands as a situated piece but it feels quite transient at the same time. Their pieces come to life in a sense. I have started to experiment with this aspect in my own work through shadows and moving between the pieces that I suspend from the ceiling - but it needs more. perhaps, maybe a fan or interactive audio or video that changes when motion is present. Video would be cool to incorporate into my work but I am not too confident in how it would look or work, as it sometimes can be daunting due to how complex it can be. I had made some quick videos using a video camera and my phone to see how they would look once projected and I was happy with the results but I would like to make something a bit more structured and have it edited properly.

The use of shadows over the videos is something I love and will continue to experiment with. I wish I had took more photos of how the videos looked once projected onto the surfaces.
