keeping up with drawing.
I've found my style has been developing really quickly, i feel more confident in my drawing now and letting mistakes be mistakes. I've decided to ditch the narrative I thought I craved for these drawings, I feel like they speak for themselves and adding a narrative or a structure would dilute their uniqueness and spontaneous qualities. Observations have been fueling my drawings in ways I hadn't thought of. I like the juxtaposition of domestic places with my imaginary people and animals. I've been thinking about more detailed faces and more about painting. I've started a few paintings but don't know if canvas is right for me, there's something about it. I'm gonna try and find some spare wood or thicker paper to paint on, i feel canvas grains get in the way of my drawings, although, i still want to paint. I left my oil paint in Dundee which was one of many mistakes but i've been trying out acrylic paints again and i'm not too sure if i like those either hahahah. It's a constant game of going back and forth with things i want to do and actually - do. I think i'll get there though.

continuing with clay casts, this one was of some canvas. i love the textures and lines it leaves behind. I decided to bring my drawings onto the surface to explore taking my drawing in a three dimensional way. I've thought about creating clay replicas of my figures and making a mini landscape with them.. I'm still unsure whether they need to be just drawings or something more?
Ani Krikorian " Wearable Constructs" 2012.
I like the idea of taking the clothes i give them and turning that into the physical object. I've been brainstorming ideas of a wearable garment which is both functional and also part installation piece. I was inspire by Ani Krikorian and their "wearable constructs" piece, i like this exploration of people and object within a space. I feel my work headed into a similar direction, still with installation as a backing bone but with added elements. I like when Krikorian said : " ...the work results as a continuous dialogue between craftsmanship and physical participation all along the design process" (designboom.com) I resonate with what they're saying about the physical participation of creating and making something from scratch, I feel my thought process is very intuitive and my mind acts as a sketchbook at times which then filters out into the work i make and experiment with. for example, last semester my sketchbook was mainly my mind and how i could imagine the multiple ways my installation would take shape, i then acted on that in the studio and documented it through photos. I feel there is maybe a drawback to not pre-planning something like a sculpture beforehand but I feel that sometimes takes away the fun? I like the element of surprise and not knowing what I will get at the end of making something.

the idea of a wearable installation piece is something i would like to explore and bring into my practice, I'm always looking for new ways to incorporate that interactive element into my work in the best way i see fit. the interactive element is something i may have to put on the back burner for a moment. I like the shapes and idea i came up with, a multi-functional piece that works as a piece on it's own as well as a functional piece of clothing. i was thinking back to last semester and the excavation and collection idea i had, when we go hiking/exploring we take certain things with us, so i wanted to create a garment that can cater to these needs. I thought about detachable pockets that can act as bags while also as pockets when attached to the main body of the garment. I wanted to create something that can withstand the elements and be considered fashionable at the same time. I'd been watching a lot of Iris Van herpen and runway videos when I decided to take my work in a more fashionable approach and see how it would interact. i'm interested in the way my work takes up space and transforms a space into something other, that other being what I make it. The way my materials interact and change a space into another world which i help curate, is something special and mesmerising, i always find myself wrapped up in the little things and continue to develop them into something else. little things being, the markings and drawings i make, they are apart of something bigger which leads to my installations. i think their is scope for my work to progress into a wearable and detachable form while also upholding the ideas and thoughts i have demonstrated throughout my other works. After all, my installations are an extension of my painting and drawing work, they are physical pieces which are interactive and immersive - like my drawings brought to life.
I've been keeping up with life drawing too as i feel it's a staple of my week and keeps me on track while also developing my observational and drawing skills.
my favourite drawings from this weeks class. 40 minute sketch and a 6 minute one on some scrap paper. Been drawn to charcoal a lot lately, i love the tones and the way it smudges to create movement.
