Week Two was somewhat similar to the first week, a lot of research and creating new ideas to then develop and explore. Recently I have become intrigued by film and moving image and ways in which I can translate my ideas through such methods, similar to Stan Brackidge and how he creates vibrant and mesmerising films through images and textures. I would like to do something similar as compared to last year, when I only used still images through the projector. I want to try moving images and project the images onto tactile surfaces and create more idyllic atmospheres through multiple senses - whether it be sound, smell or touch. Speaking to my tutor and other students throughout the week opened my mind to new possibilities. I just need to get over the act of overthinking and just do it! I spoke to my tutor about film and possibly filming parts of my paintings/ work and then maybe incorporating myself within the pieces and try bring in new elements like monologue or sound to the films I would create. Practicing my Gaeilge (Irish) and perhaps other languages may bring about new possibilities in which my work could be interpreted. I really liked the idea of using different languages as opposed to just English as languages are something I am genuinely interested in and it would be good to have another reason to practice! First, I might try and bring in a monologue to my work through written text to either accompany my work or have it scattered within as another problem I was facing was - if my work was too allusive. I'm worried that not having enough context for my work or having too much context in my work may distract what I see it as. I need to find the middle ground and try to stick within that - but also be open to experimentation in the process.
I would like to experiment more with print and photography which I will push myself to do over the upcoming weeks. I began two new paintings and tried new techniques of making my work seem more dreamy and ephemeral. I need to play on these ideas more which, looking at installation art has helped a lot, I recently got this book from the library called "Installation Art Now" which features so many amazing works by the likes of, Isa Barbier, Tokujin Yoshioka and Onishi Yasuaki. I really loved their work and how they communicate ideas of fragility and ephemerality in todays world. I would like to eventually try something like this and somehow bring in all elements of my work into an installation context. Especially after looking at Haegue Yangs work and how she incorporates everyday objects into her work but uses those objects to communicate ideas without language. I found this really intriguing and it made me start thinking how I could perhaps try this with my paintings as well as installation work.
"Reverse of Volume" Onishi Yasuaki
My work felt a bit stagnant in the beginning and still does, I feel like I am picking up the pace now and getting more into the swing of things. I need to focus more on research and critical thinking in terms of my work - rather than just doing. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with either but the latter seems to be eating me alive in a way that has made me become "lazy".
