Semester Two - Week two

experimenting with some spare paper at home. I'm still figuring out whether or not i want my sculptures to be free standing or have them suspended. Thinking back to my first semester at DJCAD and i suspended fabric but I felt it lacked form and any sense of life - i want to improve those qualities. I like the idea of having something standing stationary and on its own. i've been brainstorming ideas about a idealised space and how i would go about setting up objects and pieces for display. I like the approach Misaki Kawai and Anna Oppermann take on displaying their work.

Anna Oppermann "Paradoxical Intentions"

I've been doing a lot of drawing lately, and i've been plastering them around my room like an impromptu studio. I've been collating a mixture of drawings, paintings and written text and seeing where they take me. I love the idea of having a space - whether domestic or external - and filling it up with various pieces to see how they interact and inhabit a space.

Air drying clay fun

I'm still thinking about ways to explore my work through clay and other tactile mediums. I ordered some air drying clay and began experimenting with forms, i took some casts of some paper and canvas i had in my room. The pieces turned out sort of ugly but I don't mind that. I've been getting over this idea that things have to be refined or perfect to be complete. I feel it's been harder for my sculpture as i can see where i should've taken them or what i could have done to change them, but i realised this only holds me back. I can make more pieces and see where they take me. If I was back in the clay workshop, I'd have taken casts with porcelain paper clay and slip to make casts to then turn into sculptures and explore glazes. I found drawing on clay is something i've never thought about and I really like it, there's a certain textural quality it gives my work which I really like.

We've started making more headway with the SCT postal group, we're finalising ideas and continuing the discussion around what we want to explore and how we're gonna do it efficiently. We had a trial run over Christmas break which was successful and we all received some great artwork, we're thinking about doing another one within the next few weeks to test out our skills and ideas.
