Semester Two: Weeks 13 & 14

Writer's picture: Declan McCourtDeclan McCourt

I spent the next few weeks doing similar things to the last. apart from the tv shows and albums I listened to, nothing much changed.

Drifting between making Dalgona coffees and going for walks in the wilderness, I decided it would be a good opportunity to practice with oil paints again. It annoys how long it takes to dry, but I know it's all to do with technique and trial and error which I am getting used to.

I like the attempt so far and I am excited to see how my work would look in a larger scale using the same techniques and styling as seen in this painting. I think it would look better in a larger scale and that's something I intend on tackling in the upcoming months and throughout year 3. I feel as if I have been quite timid with the sizing of my work in fear of it becoming too much to process and tackle, but I need to realise it's all experimentation and nothing is too final as it seems. I have some left over canvas, so I might attempt another painting on a larger scale and see how it goes.

going for walks alone has really helped my anxiety and relieve stress during this time. I enjoy being surrounded by nature and being able to go for walks and get lost in ideas. I can feel the outside world creeping more and more into my work and I am happy with how its headed and the potential it poses. I have been listening to one of favourite bands 'Hyukoh' quite a lot when going for my walks and they add to the dreamlike quality of the walks I find myself on.

Documentation of my work has went well and I managed to get better at editing photos to a standard I am content with, there still is room for improvement 100%. I got a spontaneous idea to hang one of my paintings from the clothing line in the garden to see what different lighting and shadows I could get from the sun. it wasn't as successful as hoped as the sun bleached the colours too much and made the exposure too high.
